Green Hill is a very atmospheric and beautiful Amazon forest survival simulator that insidiously greets you with its apparent simplicity. The tutorial gently, like a baby, introduces you to the basics of the game, tells you about your needs, how the crafting system works, or how to interact with objects. And then – a miracle! You are alone in the middle of the forest. What happened? Where is everyone? What to do? It is unknown, and you have to look for answers to all these questions. In our article you will find out more.

The overview of the story plot is what players love about Green Hell. They love it and they hate it.

In most cases, various survival games tend to lack a profound storyline. The primary focus is usually on gameplay mechanics, such as resource gathering, constructing shelters, and engaging in battles with enemies. This repetitive cycle continues until it starts to feel monotonous. While Green Hell does include this survival mode, its main attraction lies in the narrative aspect, which actually features two distinct storyline paths that offer depth and engagement.

In the first storyline, the main character embarks on a mission to find a cure for a terrifying disease that is rapidly decimating populations across the globe. The secret to this elusive cure is known only to a small Amazonian tribe that he must locate. However, just when things seem to be on track, disaster strikes; the protagonist suffers a fall that results in memory loss, complicating his quest. Thankfully, in the very first abandoned village he encounters, he uncovers a recipe for a concoction rumored to assist in recovering lost memories.

No, Covid-19 has nothing to do with it; it’s just a coincidence.

The second part of the story is much grander in scope. Our hero goes in search of a tribe in the depths of the Amazon and establishes contact with them. In order to succeed, he must first help several other local tribes. Without this help, they will flatly refuse to accompany him on his journey. The tasks that these tribes assign will vary greatly: from finding lost children and rescuing captured women to healing wounded hunters, cleaning rivers from garbage, burying the dead and collecting local legends during a battle with the spirits of the jungle. After completing these missions, he will undergo a ritual and drink a local shamanic drink. This drink will give him a trance, where he will have to undergo a psychedelic experience. In this altered state, he will have to participate in a mini-game against the spirits, hoping to emerge victorious.

It’s creepy, of course. This is probably the weakest part of the game.

Clear crafting system and resource extraction in the game Green Hell

One in the middle of the forest first needs to make at least a knife. This is how the crafting system greets us. There are no recipes as such. More precisely, they are there, but they appear in the book only after the successful creation of an item. That is, you yourself, by trial and error, get to the point of creating this or that thing. Moreover, it is worth noting that this crafting system is quite logical: take a stone and use a rope to attach it to a stick – this is how you get an axe. And if you tie a stone knife to a long stick, then, lo and behold, a spear appeared in your hands.

The second option for obtaining recipes is to find an unknown building or weapon, thereby seeing how they look and, accordingly, are made. But this will not happen often, in most cases you yourself will figure out how to make a knife or a bow.

And what is important, the game does not force you to collect a ton of materials in order to deliberately slow down your progress and increase the difficulty. No, she does it in a masterful way – she hands you a backpack limited in volume and weight, thereby forcing you to play Tetris with materials and think about what you will need on your next foray. You need to not only select all the necessary tools, but also leave room for the resources you extract, and you will be constantly dealing with this logistics. Suddenly stumbling upon a piece of obsidian, you are faced with a choice – what to throw out of your backpack for the sake of the necessary ores. And making this choice is not so easy due to an interesting hunger system.

The Stamina System and the Impact of Nutrition on Survival in Green Hell

Your smartwatch displays four parameters: proteins, fats, carbohydrates and thirst. Each of these parameters is important, a decrease in any of them leads to a decrease in your overall endurance. Oddly enough, we get useful macronutrients from food. The only catch is that bananas are great at restoring carbohydrates – and that’s it. Following this simple logic of the game, we cannot fry a bunch of meat and walk around with only that – we need a variety of food. Moreover, food tends to spoil and does not last long. You can’t stock up or cook much for future use, there is no refrigerator, and a lot does not fit in a backpack.

As we mentioned earlier, a lack of one of the parameters leads to a decrease in the character’s endurance. And endurance, aka a reserve of strength, affects all your actions. Cut down a tree – spend your strength. Run from a predator – and here you can’t do without endurance. Stamina is spent when you pull the bowstring or try to jump onto a ledge. A decline in strength can lead to the character not being able to swing a weapon or even start a fire at the right moment. It’s a bad idea to stay in the local forests at night without light. The only worse thing is if you don’t have enough strength to reach the base, and the character collapses from fatigue.

Spending the night on the bare ground has terrible consequences. Firstly, you won’t get enough rest, and secondly, you’ll immediately pick up worms that will gradually reduce your sanity. And then it’s not far to the appearance of insinuating voices. If you don’t restore your sanity, the darkness will torment you more and more. Incomprehensible shadows will appear, increasing your fear. And these fears are not unfounded – after all, shadow hunters will come for you.

The game does not feature any independent markers on the map. Players cannot leave a stash and designate it in a manner that would make it visible from afar. Additionally, many significant locations remain unmarked entirely. Even when taking into account the relatively small scale of the action, getting lost among just three palm trees becomes incredibly easy and frustrating. A compass offers no assistance when the surroundings are entirely green, making navigation even more challenging. The lack of clear landmarks adds to the confusion, leaving players feeling disoriented and lost in an expansive world.

So, we’ve got a little bit of a handle on crafting. Now you know how to make an axe and make a fire. Moreover, you understand how to keep your character’s stats at the right level, and here you begin to notice all the beauty of that green hell that is constantly trying to kill you. The nature in Green Hell is dangerous, but beautiful. We must give credit to the developers – they worked out the environment with due care, and the game designers brought it to perfection with sunrises and sunsets. You can naturally admire them. Despite the intimacy of the world, it is interesting to explore: you study new plants, and your character makes notes about them in his journal – after all, he is a scientist.

Optimization, graphics and sound quality in Green Hell

It is also worth noting that the game has excellent optimization settings – it is not too demanding on hardware, allowing you to enjoy all its beauty even on average PCs. Alas, only a little. The game does not have foreign graphic heights to stupidly freeze in some places. Everything works smoothly, without slowdowns and freezes. In terms of graphics, the project looks at a high level and for some reason it is compared to Far Cry 3, probably for the similarity with nature and the environment. However, it was not without bugs: after the plot videos, gamers often had bowls fall through the surface on which they stood, so it is better to place all the dishes on the ground.

The audio experience is remarkably captivating and adds depth to the gameplay. The developers aimed to express through sound what they couldn’t depict visually. You’ll encounter the hum of large insects buzzing around, the calls of diverse birds filling the air, and the haunting cries of howler monkeys echoing through the trees. The powerful roars of predators resonate in the distance, alongside the rustling sounds made by various herbivores moving through the underbrush. Additionally, there are the eerie melodies of headhunters, accompanied by their coded signals that can help you skillfully navigate the treacherous environment and avoid confrontations when listened to attentively.

Surprisingly, music is only present in the menu and within the vibrant villages of local tribes, where it enhances the cultural atmosphere. Throughout the rest of the land, you’ll be engulfed by the symphony of the jungle, a constant reminder of the wild surroundings. Or perhaps you’ll hear the unsettling whispers in your mind if your character is driven to the edge of insanity, creating an immersive experience that blurs the line between reality and the character’s troubled psyche. This rich auditory landscape truly enhances the overall narrative, drawing players deeper into the story.

Wildlife Dangers: Survival Through Experience and Mistakes

The harsh truth is that this beautiful world is not friendly to humans. Literally everything is trying to kill you: from thirst and altitude to the local fauna. There are jaguars and wild boars on the ground, poisonous spiders and scorpions in the caves, piranhas and caimans in the water. Even bees can sting you so that the resulting rash will eventually lead to death. There are three types of birds. And even monkeys you only hear, but do not see. All the same game conventions. A charming world, to be sure.

There are also funny situations: when you accidentally stumble upon a lizard in the tall grass, at first you get scared and start running away, but then you realize that it is the lizard running away from you. It is also worth mentioning that the food is not safe for health – eating anything without washing your hands, as in real life, can lead to poisoning, and then to fever. I will say right away: most likely, you will die because of this. Have we mentioned it already? Well, let’s repeat – you will die often and constantly. Die from everything. But each death is a lesson. You will learn to avoid danger next time or find ways to correct the consequences. Remember: a snake bite can be survived if you apply a bandage with medicine in time and give the body time to recover. But in order to come to this, you will most likely die first. What’s more, even an ordinary scratch can become fatal if it is not treated in time and dirt gets into it. Experience is the son of difficult mistakes, as they say. And although Green Hell is a game in the survival genre, it does not focus only on this.

Green Hell system requirements

To play Green Hell, you will need at least 4GB of RAM and at least 8GB of free space on your hard drive. The least powerful graphics card that can handle the game is the GeForce GTX 660. However, if you want to play in more comfortable conditions, the developers strongly recommend upgrading to the Radeon RX 580, which can do better performance. As for the processor, the minimum requirement is the Pentium Extreme Edition 955. However, if you want to improve your settings and enjoy a smoother and more fluid gaming experience, it is wise to choose a higher-end processor such as the Pentium Extreme Edition 955 or even better models.
