2017 was hardly a successful year for Electronic Arts. The major blow to the company’s reputation came from the high-profile scandal surrounding Star Wars Battlefront II—it was then that the issue of loot boxes entered the political arena, and no one has yet decided what to do about them.
But the string of misfortunes didn’t end there. Following this, players were treated to Need for Speed Payback, a game that for many symbolized the downfall of the once-iconic series. Instead of adrenaline-fueled racing and honest rewards for victory, players were treated to an absurd one-armed bandit, determining which parts would be awarded to your car. It was moments like these that made you realize that NFS hadn’t simply veered off the track—it had crashed full speed into a concrete barrier, leaving fans completely baffled.

In Need for Speed Heat, players can finally breathe a sigh of relief—there are no donations or intrusive microtransactions. And, let’s be honest, it’s unlikely Electronic Arts will risk repeating past mistakes and throwing itself a curveball like that again. Progression feels fair and clear, there are a few fresh ideas, and the races themselves deliver that same sense of excitement that makes the series so beloved. But there are some weak points, too—some of the series’ long-standing problems have resurfaced.
The main stumbling block is the plot. The creators are persistently trying to turn Need for Speed into a dramatic story about street racers whose dreams of speed are constantly ruined by mean cops. Conflicts, arrests, threats—it all feels forced, and the dialogue is at times overlong. Particularly annoying is how often you have to endure chatter on the way to the start of a race. You just want to get behind the wheel and hit the gas—but instead, you waste time talking and driving to the checkpoint.
The narrative pacing suffers even more. Let’s say you complete a story mission, and then—stop: you need a more powerful car for the next race. So instead of advancing the story, you have to spend hours lapping standard races for currency and upgrades. Ultimately, the narrative thread is lost, and with it, the motivation. Ghost Games clearly needs to rethink its storytelling: right now, it exists more as a backdrop to somehow justify the action onscreen, but it doesn’t really drive interest.

Day and night racing gameplay
The game’s racing is cleverly and engagingly designed: all content is divided into two distinct sections—day and night races. During the day, you race in official competitions on fenced tracks and earn money. At night, it’s a completely different story: illegal races earn you reputation rather than cash. And without reputation, you won’t be able to buy serious modifications and cool cars—the more expensive the part, the higher the required “respect” level from dealers. Therefore, you have to constantly switch between regular and night races to earn money and grow your reputation.
At night, you can be caught by the police—in the middle of a race or immediately after, while you’re studying the map for the next route. Maps don’t wait: as soon as a cop shows up, it automatically disappears, and chaos ensues. Dispatchers call out your car’s make, reinforcements arrive, the cops try to force you to the side of the road or even ram you—and you respond by crashing, maneuvering, and trying to throw your pursuers off the map.
Your car has durability: every hit against another car or tree reduces its “health.” But there’s salvation—gas stations fully restore your car, though only three times a night. If you’re caught, you’ll have to say goodbye to both your money and some of your reputation—in the world of street racing, that’s not respected. But if you manage to cause a spectacular crash between the cops and escape into the dark night with a boosted reputation multiplier, you’ll be thrilled.
Driving chases are so adrenaline-pumping that even the simplest chase becomes a test of skill: outwit your pursuers, save your car, make it to the gas station on time, and reach the next race on time—all of this determines whether you’ll reach the safety of your hideout with the points you’ve earned or risk running into a squadron of cops and losing everything. Victory brings generous rewards—large sums of money and a host of new items that can be unlocked in one lucky night.
How car tuning works in Need for Speed Heat
The races in Need for Speed Heat are captivating from the very first minute, even though the modes are limited and the process can feel a bit monotonous over time. The controls are responsive: accelerating is a familiar process with the R2 button, and drifting is accomplished by simply releasing and re-pressing it at the right moment with a slight tilt of the stick. It may seem like a simple mechanic, but it’s these simple movements that create that thrilling feeling. When, on a sharp 90-degree turn, you don’t fly into the barriers, but instead drift perfectly, overtaking your rivals—for those moments in Heat, you forgive a lot.
Of course, cars can be customized to suit your style. Modifications play a key role here: some parts make the car more stable and comfortable on city roads, others allow you to feel confident off-road, and still others transform the car into a true drift monster. The progression system is simple and logical, with no annoying loot boxes—just honest progression that delivers exactly what you’d expect from an arcade racing game with customization options.
However, the open world has its issues. Palm City, inspired by Miami, looks stylish, but feels empty. There are no pedestrians or live traffic—it’s as if you’ve entered a post-apocalyptic city rather than a metropolis. Ultimately, it becomes more of a backdrop, racing through from one start to the next.
Yet the developers managed to fill the map with activities that break up the routine. Over time, you unlock speed radars, graffiti for customizing cars, ramp jumps, billboards, and drift zones. These elements make exploring the city a captivating experience. During the day, the graphics may not seem the most impressive, but come nightfall, the atmosphere changes: neon lights reflect in puddles, the tracks glow with checkpoint lights, and police chases deliver that adrenaline rush that makes Need for Speed Heat worth playing.
The Pros and Cons of Need for Speed Heat
The Need for Speed series has long been competing with giants like Forza Horizon, and a new release is unlikely to be a revolution against their background. Nevertheless, Need for Speed Heat came out well and definitely does not cause a sense of shame for the franchise.
It’s a pleasure to play it: there are no annoying loot boxes, intrusive microtransactions or other garbage that prevents you from enjoying the process. The developers have relied on the main thing — speed, excitement and drive. The division of races is especially interesting: during the day you participate in official races and earn money, and at night you take risks by participating in illegal races, where your reputation and meetings with the police are at stake.
If the plot clips seem boring, it’s easy to skip them and just go headfirst into the races. However, the musical accompaniment was disappointing in places: instead of cheerful racing tracks, lounge or club rhythms are often played, more suitable for Ibiza than for street chases. However, you can always turn on your music and fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere.
Advantages of Need for Speed Heat:
-
a fascinating division into day and night races;
-
Dynamic chases with cops that really add to the adrenaline rush;
-
a clear and convenient progress system;
-
additional activities beyond the standard check-ins.
Cons of Need for Speed Heat:
-
The plot still doesn’t catch on and is quickly forgotten;
-
Music is not always appropriate;
-
The city seems empty: minimal traffic and no passersby.
Bottom line: Need for Speed Heat cannot be called a new milestone in the genre, but it is an honest and driving arcade game that you want to return to for the atmosphere of night racing and adrenaline chases with the police. For fans of the series, this is quite enough.
