On April 30th, TerraTech Legion, an action roguelike game where you build block-based combat vehicles and survive a hail of enemy fire, will be released on Xbox Series X and PC. Publisher Mythwright and developer Payload Studios have confirmed the game will be available on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store, with Game Pass subscribers receiving it on release day.

If you’re familiar with the original TerraTech, you’ll have a general idea of what to expect, though Legion takes the formula further, focusing on bullet-heaven combat and relentless waves of enemies. The premise is classic: a planetary system is under attack by the Legion, a horde of AI bots that assimilate everything in their path. You, a resilient TerraTech pilot, are the galaxy’s last hope.

The game’s main feature is modular vehicle assembly. Wheels, boosters, chainsaws, and even orbital lasers: you decide how your Tech moves and crushes enemies. The further you climb, the more new blocks you unlock. Your designs become increasingly insane and efficient—from full-speed ramming to a barrage of shells that can destroy entire Legion factory outposts.

You’ll have to survive in a “sea of bullets.” Waves of bots roll in one after another, the map is littered with enemy outposts, and for dessert, mech bosses guarding the planetary overlords. Destroy a factory? Get a crate with new parts. Defeat a boss and you’ve cleared the world. Physics is fair here: mass, speed, and inertia depend on what you’ve attached to the chassis, so smashing into a crowd of enemies at full speed is a thrill in itself.

Between races, there are mobile upgrade stations for repairs, rebuilding, and installing mined blocks. As you progress, you’ll unlock specialized corporations with their own unique styles. GeoCorp emphasizes power and armor, Venture emphasizes speed and maneuverability, and Hawkeye Systems provides advanced weaponry to deliver shock and awe.

Locations promise a variety of experiences, each with unique landscape challenges and its own set of rewards. Key components can be upgraded between missions, making the next run even more furious.

By the way, the “bullet heaven” genre (a sort of reverse bullet hell, where bullets are everywhere, but you do most of the dodging) has been on the rise lately—and Payload Studios, judging by the description, has decided to combine it with TerraTech’s signature design freedom. Whether they can strike a balance between chaos and crafting remains to be seen in a couple of weeks.
