Scrooge McDuck from “DuckTales,” that old miser, fills his treasure chest by embarking on thrilling adventures in exotic lands alongside a lively and cheerful crew. In the economic video game Rise of Industry, we build our wealth through a very different approach—one that feels incredibly real and often leads to genuine headaches, just like in the real world. It’s challenging and quite far from entertaining. Yet, surprisingly, the game truly deserves our attention and respect.

The realm of economic strategy games has always carved out its own unique niche in the gaming landscape. These games attract players who appreciate depth and meticulous planning over the rush of adrenaline or gripping narratives. Gamers come seeking a thoughtful journey, rewarded with a process that captivates through its slower, more deliberate pace. However, Rise of Industry stands out remarkably even among its genre counterparts, offering a rich experience that keeps players engaged and invested in their virtual enterprises.

Rise of Industry launched at a rather unfortunate time, as fans of capital-building games had just enjoyed the stunning Anno 1800. Direct comparisons are largely pointless due to the significant differences in their budgets and production values. While Anno quickly draws players in with its captivating gameplay and beautiful graphics, Rise of Industry offers a different, more methodical experience. It tends to deter even those who have been playing economic strategies since childhood. Created by Dapper Penguin Studios, this game resembles an industrial simulation, featuring a steep entry barrier that can be challenging for newcomers. It unfolds at a slow pace; the tutorial includes an astonishing 53 lessons, yet many elements of gameplay and strategy remain untouched and require exploration.

Much like any simulator—whether it’s about commanding a submarine or soaring through the vastness of space—Rise of Industry rewards those who are patient and willing to invest time. The joy of witnessing the tangible results of your efforts after navigating a series of intricate steps and strategic decisions is especially fulfilling and creates a deep sense of accomplishment.

You wont find any trade unions here, like in Anno 1800 – workers work without rest and without end

Players eager to embark on their journey in the game can anticipate exciting career modes or the freedom to explore in a “sandbox.” Notably, multiplayer competition is absent; the developers, who maintained an active dialogue with the community during the early access phase, concluded that the game’s format isn’t compatible with online play. This decision stems from the critical importance of active pauses and the ability to accelerate time, which are essential for strategic planning. However, they have happily encouraged modders to pursue this possibility in their own way. For the time being, it’s advisable to kick things off in the “sandbox,” where financial resources are endless, and competitors won’t threaten your markets.

Rise of Industry stands out by demanding players take into account an impressive variety of factors while quickly revealing their effectiveness in navigating the complexities of capitalism. A savvy capitalist will conduct meticulous reconnaissance before initiating a business venture, identifying prime locations with fertile land and excellent potential for development. The game encourages you to discover areas with less competition, where the local population is more inclined to spend their money on an extensive range of goods. Once you’ve decided to settle near a charming town that catches your eye, you’ll need to participate in an auction to secure the rights to the foundations of your empire.

Rise of Industry effectively captures the essence of a great economic simulation game. It’s engaging to construct production chains that can be quite elaborate and intricate. Our little venture, which began with just water and sand, has grown to sell LEDs, a testament to our entrepreneurial spirit. There’s real pleasure in building countless roads and managing transportation logistics, making every decision feel impactful. The game beautifully conveys the excitement of expanding your own large enterprise, providing a sense of accomplishment.

The graphics resemble a stylish cartoon

The graphics are visually appealing, allowing players to enjoy the vibrant world they create. It’s delightful to see your finished projects come alive: miniature trucks cruising down the roads, smoke rising from factory stacks, and intricate machines coming to life with each passing moment. Additionally, the background music adds a nice touch to the overall experience, enhancing immersion in this bustling industrial environment. Yet, certain clumsy implementations really undermine the overall enjoyment and can be frustrating for players. The interface is quite confusing. How could the developers inundate players with such a plethora of menus and tiny icons with sliders? Navigating through this clutter can feel overwhelming, especially for newcomers. Still, within this chaos, there are some truly brilliant features! For instance, hitting Alt displays a sphere indicator above all items. When the sphere fills with green and approaches the top, everything is running smoothly, giving players visual feedback on their progress. If it turns red, it’s a clear sign that things aren’t looking good. It’s an excellent idea—why not create more features like this to enhance user experience?

The diverse activities in Rise of Industry offer both triumph and frustration for players. While it’s exciting to craft a business plan from various components, it can be overwhelming when nearly EVERYTHING is locked at the start. The intricate production and sales systems can easily falter if you overlook just one crucial piece among dozens, leaving players scrambling for solutions in a game that is stingy with hints. Why does it take an eternity to rotate and position a fish farm? If building were prohibited in that area, it would make sense, but frustratingly, the farm must be placed exactly there, creating unnecessary challenges. Random events, such as promotions from landowners, do occur, yet these are quite rare with default settings, leaving the experience feeling stagnant. This lack of vibrancy detracts from the charm of the otherwise quaint towns, which feel devoid of life and activity.

The city seems to be in an eternal sleep – the streets are empty to the point of ringing silence

Moreover, the game may alienate even more players due to a glaring absence of motivation. We find ourselves constructing a profitable machine without any clear objectives or storylines to guide us. A brief narrative about a once-wealthy individual struggling with seven kids, a demanding mother-in-law, and a quirky cat would have added much-needed depth and engagement. Fans who love cheering during the end credits will likely leave feeling disappointed, yearning for a richer narrative experience that could elevate the gameplay.

Rise of Industry verdict

The Dapper Penguin Studios team has been actively listening to the community throughout the development process. Close interaction with players has allowed us to quickly fix bugs and refine functionality. Of course, debugging is far from the same as finishing the entire game, but as long as we have hope, we should continue to believe in the best. The Rise of Industry project demonstrates stable activity, although it places serious demands on its players.

Strengths:

• Deep control over production chains at each stage allows you to implement personalized strategies.
• A unique visual style combined with atmospheric music enhances immersion in the gameplay.

Weaknesses:

• The interface may seem overly complex and overloaded, especially for beginners.
• A sharp entry threshold with many nuances that are not always obvious may discourage interest from part of the audience.

Graphics

Although the visual design is minimalistic, it evokes warm emotions. Familiar shapes and palette create a feeling of comfort and stability, which helps the player focus on managing the business empire.

Sound

The audio is rather modest, but it does its job – it does not distract from the gameplay. The background music is maintained in calm tones, in harmony with the measured pace of the game and creates a relaxing mood.

Single player campaign

Watching how the industrial empire grows under your sensitive control is a truly exciting process. However, at times the game may not demonstrate the best responsiveness, which causes frustration and reduces the pleasure of the game.

Multiplayer mode

At the moment, the multiplayer component is not implemented, which restrains potential replayability and limits interaction between players.

Overall impression

At this stage, Rise of Industry is a decent economic simulator with deep mechanics and charismatic visual presentation. It would be a pity if the project stopped developing, because it has significant potential for growth and improvement.

Rise of Industry System Requirements

To run Rise of Industry, your computer will need at least 8 GB of RAM and at least 1 GB of free hard drive space. A graphics card of at least the Radeon HD 5450 is also required.
