The crossover fighting game Marvel vs. Capcom recently celebrated its twentieth anniversary, and Capcom, of course, did not ignore this anniversary. Last December, the company announced the long-awaited Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite – a new chapter in the legendary series, promising fresh mechanics and a modern incarnation of the beloved formula. In addition, an updated Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was released for consoles in March. It is important to emphasize: the improved UMvC3 is not just a tribute to nostalgia. This is a truly interesting fighting game that can captivate both beginners and seasoned fighters for long hours of intense fights.

The standout feature of Marvel vs. Capcom (beyond its dream roster that excites fans) is its exhilarating three-on-three battles, which unfold without traditional rounds. This allows players to switch characters seamlessly during fights, adding a layer of strategy and excitement. At any moment, you can summon a teammate to extend a combo or deliver a quick hit to an unsuspecting opponent, keeping the action fast-paced and dynamic. This innovative mechanic is somewhat mirrored in The King of Fighters 14, showcasing a trend towards more fluid gameplay. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 elevates the experience with both its characters and backgrounds, which are designed in vibrant 3D—an impressive leap that earlier versions simply could not offer. The interactive backgrounds add depth to the battles, making each fight feel more engaging and alive.

UMvC3 serves as an expanded edition of Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds (2011), refining gameplay and character balance. Unlike its predecessor, Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes (2000), the third installment introduces a different layout that resonates with enthusiasts, echoing the spirit found in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars (2008). This shift not only enhances the overall gameplay experience but also reflects the evolving nature of fighting games, where creativity and innovation are paramount.

The concept is wonderfully straightforward: you have three attack options (weak, medium, and strong), plus an additional button that lets you launch an opponent into the air with a powerful kick or swap characters seamlessly while executing an aerial combo. This feature adds a layer of strategy and creativity to the gameplay. Has this enhanced the excitement of the battles? Absolutely! The third installment is an exhilarating carnival that delights both beginners who are just learning the ropes and seasoned tournament players who are looking for a challenge. The Ultimate re-release boasts nearly fifty fighters to choose from, ensuring a diverse range of playstyles and strategies. It includes not only iconic characters from Street Fighter and Darkstalkers but also unique figures like the wolf goddess Amaterasu and Frank West from Dead Rising, who brings his quirky charm to the mix. Marvel has contributed a blend of beloved heroes from blockbuster films alongside eccentric characters like MODOK, making the roster truly unforgettable. This rich variety encourages players to experiment and find their perfect match, enhancing the overall experience.

If the standard controls feel a bit too challenging for you, consider trying out the Simple Mode—here, executing “specials” and “hyper combos” is as easy as pressing a single button. This option is perfect for those who are completely new to fighting games, except for maybe Mortal Kombat. The only downside is that it results in a rather limited move list, which might leave some players wanting more variety. Each character often requires a unique strategy to master. For example, Dante is relatively easy to grasp; he can effectively deliver powerful attacks both from a distance and in close combat, making him a versatile choice. Wolverine, on the other hand, is incredibly dangerous when it comes to close-quarters fighting, able to unleash devastating combos. Then there’s Tron Bonne, who adds a fun twist with her quirky moves and mechanics that can surprise opponents.

However, if you choose to play as Phoenix Wright or Phoenix (!), be prepared for a steeper learning curve. Phoenix, in particular, has a unique mechanic where she can resurrect as Dark Phoenix after being defeated—provided you manage to fill up five segments of the Hyper Combo Gauge. This adds an intriguing layer of strategy, as you’ll need to focus on building that gauge while also keeping your character alive.

The original Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was a huge hit, selling over two million copies in just its first month of release. This put the game well ahead of Street Fighter V in both commercial success and popularity among fans of the genre.

One of the key mechanics of the game was the hyper combo gauge, which fills up when the player lands hits or takes damage. Once the gauge is filled, you can activate a powerful team attack, which can be a spectacular point in the fight, or perform an individual hyper combo, opening up space for tactical diversity. The ally support system adds depth to the gameplay, allowing you to choose one of three types of assistance for each character. This gives players the opportunity to build unique combat strategies. For example, Chun-Li from Street Fighter brings her signature style to the team with such moves as the iconic Kikoken (energy projectile), the fast Hyakuretsu Kyaku, and the spectacular Tenshokyaku. While Ryu displays impeccable mastery through classic techniques – the mighty Hadouken, the devastating Shoryuken and the whirlwind Tatsumaki Senpukyaku.

The screenshots clearly show that a segment of the health bar is marked in a striking crimson color—restoring it is quite manageable if you switch fighters at the right moment or activate the X-Factor mode (by pressing all four main buttons on your controller simultaneously). This X-Factor feature not only speeds up your character’s movement across the arena but also amplifies the power of your attacks, making it a crucial element in gameplay. However, keep in mind that you can only activate the X-Factor once per match. Fortunately, in the re-release, players are granted the ability to trigger this powerful mode even while airborne, adding an exciting dynamic to the battles. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 at its peak: photo 4 showcases the thrill of a triple combo, which serves as your ticket to cosmic adventures. True to the best traditions of Japanese gaming, the screen erupts in vibrant shades of red and purple, creating a visually stunning spectacle. The intensity is so overwhelming that it captures not only your attention but also risks overwhelming your television. This exhilarating experience is what makes the game truly captivating.

To truly appeal to the hardcore audience, the combat system needs to offer an impressive arsenal of combo building options that stand out in the crowded fighting game market. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 does this in a big way: basic “normal” attacks can be transformed into powerful “specials” and, in turn, turn into devastating “supers”, creating a sense of a continuous increase in power and tempo of the fight. Every element of the combat system is thought out to the smallest detail – it has everything that a sophisticated player appreciates: dashes, super jumps, the ability to strengthen the block (push block), which allows you to simultaneously push back the enemy and maintain defense. Such mechanics not only make the gameplay dynamic and strategically rich, but also open up space for deep development of an individual style of play.

One of the bright features of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is the ability to quickly and easily create a unique fighting style. Capcom 3 is the Heroes and Heralds mode, a gripping campaign in which the player chooses a side: defend Earth or serve the mighty Galactus, who serves as the central antagonist. This mode doesn’t just add variety — it’s seamlessly woven into the game’s story, serving as a sort of arcade “boss mode” and enhancing the overall narrative, turning each match into part of an epic struggle for the fate of the universe.

So, what do we really have here? An almost flawless and rightly celebrated fighting game that has captured the attention of many players. However, it seems Capcom is not keen on fine-tuning it any further, as shown by the Ultimate edition and re-releases for newer platforms. This situation includes a limited selection of modes, which feels pretty ridiculous when compared to the extensive offerings from Arc System Works. Additionally, there are notable balance problems, such as endless combos for certain fighters that can disrupt the competitive scene. Moreover, the overwhelming darkness present in the arenas can be quite disconcerting and detracts from the overall experience.

The console version showcases a lovely Full HD visual experience at 60 fps, providing a smooth and visually appealing gameplay environment. It also features a nice digital art book that fans might appreciate, along with a full array of downloadable content—yet that’s pretty much where the excitement ends. There’s no built-in shop for purchasing heroes and equipment, which leads us to conclude that the Japanese developers have decided to wrap up their work on MvC3. This leaves many fans wondering about the future of the franchise and whether we will see further innovations or expansions.
